Can pesticides, copper and seasonal water temperature explain the seagrass Zostera noltei decline in the Arcachon bay? ArchiMer
Gamain, Perrine; Feurtet-mazel, Agnes; Maury-brachet, Regine; Auby, Isabelle; Pierron, Fabien; Belles, Angel; Budzinski, Helene; Daffe, Guillemine; Gonzalez, Patrice.
Dwarf eelgrasses (Zostera noltei) populations have decreased since 2005 in Arcachon Bay (southwest France). Various stressors have been pointed out, however the role of xenobiotics like pesticides or copper (Cu) and of parameters like water temperature warming have not yet been explored. To determine their impact, Z. noltei individuals were collected in a pollution-free site and transferred to the laboratory in seawater microcosms. This dwarf eelgrass was exposed to a pesticide cocktail and copper, alone or simultaneously, at temperatures (10 °C, 20 °C, 28 °C) representative of different seasons. After a two-week contamination, leaf growth, leaf bioaccumulation of Cu, and differential expression of target genes were studied. Eelgrasses bioaccumulated Cu...

Copper levels evolution in Arcachon bay oysters : role of the regulation on antifouling paints ArchiMer
Alzieu, Claude; Barbier, Georges; Sanjuan, Jane.
The ban of tributyltin compounds in antifouling paints induced a strong decrease in the level of tin in Arcachon bay. At the same time, copper inputs have increased tenfold since 1982 owing to the widespread use of paints containing cuprous oxide. In spite of this large input, the statistical analysis of monitoring data (1979-1985) show a relative stability in the copper levels in Arcachon bay oysters.

Determination of diet in Manila clams by spatial analysis of stable isotopes ArchiMer
Dang, C.; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Savoye, N.; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Martinez, P.; Millaret, C.; Haure, Joel; De Montaudouin, X..
Spatial changes in the dietary regime of Ruditapes philippinarum from intertidal sediments of Arcachon Bay were depicted by analyzing stable isotope ratios in both its adductor muscles and potential trophic sources. Manila clams were collected from 50 sites in May to June 2006. Dietary reconstruction was based on the IsoSource mixing model, considering trophic enrichments of 3.5%. for carbon and 3.0%. for nitrogen, which were determined experimentally. delta C-13 and delta N-15 values, respectively, averaged -28.2 and 5.2 parts per thousand for riverine particulate organic matter (POM), -20.6 and 4.7 parts per thousand for inner bay phytoplankton, -21.0 and 5.6%. for outer bay phytoplankton, -16.8 and 4.8 parts per thousand. for microphytobenthos, -18.4...

Effects of short flexible seagrass Zostera noltei on flow, erosion and deposition processes determined using flume experiments ArchiMer
Ganthy, Florian; Soissons, Laura; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Verney, Romaric; Sottolichio, Aldo.
Innovative flume experiments were conducted in a recirculating straight flume. Zostera noltei meadows were sampled in their natural bed sediments in the field at contrasting stages of their seasonal growth. The aims of this study were: (i) to quantify the combined effects of leaf flexibility and development characteristics of Zostera noltei canopies on their interaction with hydrodynamics; and (ii) to quantify the role of Zostera noltei meadows in suspended sediment trapping and bed sediment resuspension related with changes in hydrodynamic forcing caused by the seasonal development of seagrasses. Velocity within the canopy was significantly damped. The attenuation in velocity ranged from 34 to 87% compared with bare sediments and was associated with a...

Evolution saisonnière des populations de diatomées benthiques dans les lagunes aménagées de Certes ArchiMer
Malissen, M.o.; Lasserre, P..
In lagoons and estuarine ecosystems, the benthic microflora contributes considerably to the primary production of the area and consists largely of diatoms Monthly samplings have been made from December 1976 to March 1978 in a shallow station characterized by the lack of macrophytes. Two sets of monthly samplings were made allowing in theone hand a qualitative analysis and on the other hand a quantitative study by cellular counts. The diatom populations show a cyclic evolution with two peaks : one in February 1977 and the other in September 1977. This cycle is confirmed by the diversity and dominance analysis. Seasonal evolution is characterized by the dominance of one or more species with well marked succession of dominant species (Nitzschia Navicula et...

Hydrodynamic characterization of the Arcachon Bay, using model-derived descriptors ArchiMer
Plus, Martin; Dumas, Franck; Stanisiere, Jean-yves; Maurer, Daniele.
A numerical model (MARS-2D) was developed, with the aim of describing the hydrodynamics that prevail in Arcachon Bay. Direct model results as well as derived mixing and transport time-scales (tidal prism, local and integrated flushing times, age of water masses), were used to understand the behaviour of water masses and exchanges between the Bay and its frontiers. Particular attention was paid to the processes that drive the hydrodynamics (tides, wind and rivers), in order to understand their respective influence. The Arcachon Bay hydrodynamic system appears primarily to be highly influenced by tides; secondarily, by winds. About two third of the lagoon total volume is flushed in and out at each tidal cycle, which represent a mean tidal prism of 384...

Long-term evolution (1988-2008) of Zostera spp. meadows in Arcachon Bay (Bay of Biscay) ArchiMer
Plus, Martin; Dalloyau, Sebastien; Trut, Gilles; Isabelle, Auby; De Montaudouin, Xavier; Emery, Eric; Claire, Noel; Christophe, Viala.
The spatial variability of seagrass meadows in Arcachon Bay, was studied between 1988 and 2008 using a combination of mapping techniques based on aerial photographs for intertidal dwarf-grass (Zostera noltti) beds and acoustic sonar for permanently submerged eelgrass (Zostera marina) populations. The results show a severe decline over the period for both species, as well as an acceleration of the decline since 2005 for Z. noltii. The total surface regression over the studied period is estimated to be 22.8 km(2) for Z. noltii and 2.7 km(2) for Z. marina, which represent declines of 33 and 74% respectively. Environmental data time series spanning the same period were investigated in order to seek the causes for such a decline. The calculated inter-annual...

Modification de l'équilibre démographique de la meiofaune dans les lagunes aménagées de Certes ArchiMer
Castel, J.; Lasserre, P..
Monthly sampling for a 2-year period allowed comparisons between the communities of meiofauna living in fish ponds ("reservoirs a poissons de Certes") and those inhabiting a contiguous tidal pool ("lac de tonne"). Nematods and copepods constitute the bulk of the meiofaunal populations. The community structure of copepods is considered in detail. The communities of copepods are clearly separated between the two areas. In terms of abundance, diversity and species persistence, the meiofauna is more stable in the intertidal pool than in the fish ponds. When the seasons are well marked, the community structure of the copepods in the fish ponds is nearly equilibrated in spring, with a maximum of diversity in May-June. During high eutrophication periods, in...

Nutrient export to an Eastern Atlantic coastal zone: first modeling and nitrogen mass balance ArchiMer
Canton, Mathieu; Anschutz, Pierre; Coynel, Alexandra; Polsenaere, Pierre; Auby, Isabelle; Poirier, Dominique.
We have studied 15 catchments supplying freshwater to a French Atlantic coastal lagoon, where increase in nitrogen loads due to agriculture is supposed to have destabilized the ecosystem in the last decades. The catchment is a lowland composed of Pleistocene sands with an average slope of 0.25%. To study the nutrient export in relation to land-use surface waters were sampled bi-weekly between October 2006 and January 2009 and land-use was established by plane photographs and Geographic Information System (GIS). Cultivated pine forests represent more than 80% of the total surface and 7% of the catchment area has been deforested recently. Significant areas of some catchments are used for maize crop. Housing is confined to the coastal zone. Maize and forest...

Optimization of a survey using spatially balanced sampling: a single-year application of clam monitoring in the Arcachon Bay (SW France) ArchiMer
Kermorvant, Claire; Caill-milly, Nathalie; D'Amico, Frank; Bru, Noelle; Sanchez, Florence; Lissardy, Muriel; Brown, Jennifer.
Bivalves are important components of benthic marine and freshwater ecosystems throughout the world. One of the most exploited bivalves used for human consumption is manila clam (Venerupis philippinarum). In Arcachon Bay (SW France), commercial fishers and scientists have developed a monitoring survey to estimate clam stocks to assist in implementing a sustainable management strategy. The survey design that is currently used is based on standard stratified random sampling (StRS). The survey has been undertaken every 2 years since 2006. Each survey costs approximately (sic) 50 000, with funding provided by similar to 20% of the commercial fishers. The survey is quite expensive, given that this resource is managed mostly at a regional level. In 2016 for...

Origin and composition of sediment organic matter in a coastal semi-enclosed ecosystem: An elemental and isotopic study at the ecosystem space scale ArchiMer
Dubois, S.; Savoye, N.; Gremare, Antoine; Plus, Martin; Charlier, K.; Beltoise, A.; Blanchet, Hugues.
The origin and composition of sediment organic matter (SOM) were investigated together with its spatial distribution in the Arcachon Bay - a macrotidal lagoon that shelters the largest Zostera noltii meadow in Europe - using elemental and isotopic ratios. Subtidal and intertidal sediments and primary producers were both sampled in April 2009. Their elemental and isotopic compositions were assessed. Relative contributions of each source to SOM were estimated using a mixing model. The SOM composition tended to be homogeneous over the whole ecosystem and reflected the high diversity of primary producers in this system. On average, SOM was composed of 25% of decayed phanerogams, 19% of microphytobenthos, 20% of phytoplankton, 19% of river SPOM and 17% of...

Programme coordonné Ecotron sur le site d'Arcachon (Aquitaine, France) : contrôle de la production biologique marine dans un écosystème lagunaire aménagé (réservoirs à poissons) - Bilan, synthèse et perspectives ArchiMer
Lasserre, Pierre.
Coordinated ECOTRON Program on the Arcachon Basin (Aquitaine, France) : Control of marine biological production in a man-modified lagoon ecosystem (fish ponds). Results, synthesis and prospects. The "fish reservoirs" of the Arcachon Basin consist of eutrophic lagoon ecosystems, empirically exploited for extensive amphihaline fish culture (grey mullets, sea bass, eels, sea breams). The 1000 hectares of exploited farms, well integrated in a traditional socio-economic context, are presently not adapted for various reasons. The coordinate researches, which have been developed at Arcachon since 1974, within the ECOTRON (CNEXO) Program, show that these highly productive man modified ecosystems are well adapted for the development of semi-intensive aquaculture....

Role of tidal pumping on nutrient cycling in a temperate lagoon (Arcachon Bay, France) ArchiMer
Deborde, J; Anschutz, P; Auby, Isabelle; Gle, C; Commarieu, M; Maurer, Daniele; Lecroart, P; Abril, G.
The hypothesis of nutrient-rich pore-waters seeping at low tide through sediments to channel waters, which drain tidal flats during ebb, was evaluated in the Arcachon lagoon. The back of the bay is affected by freshwater inputs and underground freshwater discharges. The upper part of tidal flat consists of permeable sandy sediments, which are covered by a muddy sediment layer on the lower part. Permeable sediments outcrop in the bed of channel web. Surface water chemistry and early diagenesis processes in sediment were estimated by collecting channel web waters and cores on a tidal flat and in channels at different seasons and time scales. Waters from tidal creeks are under-oxygenated, and enriched in reduced solutes. Muddy sediments showed evidences of...

Spatio-temporal patterns of perkinsosis in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum from Arcachon Bay (SW France) ArchiMer
Dang, Cecile; De Montaudouin, Xavier; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Trumbic, Zeljka.
Pathogens belonging to the genus Perkinsus infect many bivalve molluscan species around the world, including the Manila clam Ruditapes phihppinarum. We investigated the spatial distribution of this parasite at 34 stations throughout Arcachon Bay (SW France). Prevalence of perkinsosis was 93% and mean infection abundance was 96 x 10(3) cells g(-1) wet gill. Lowest mean abundances were found close to the Leyre River mouth and a significant negative correlation was observed between mean abundance and salinity. Perkinsosis was rare at the oceanic site where salinities and other environmental parameters were stable. A second aim of this study was to survey perkinsosis during annual cycles at 4 sites within Arcachon Bay. Prevalence and intensities (+/-SE) of the...

Structure et importance des peuplements zooplanctoniques dans la baie d'Arcachon : milieux ouverts et lagunes aménagées de Certes ArchiMer
Castel, J.; Courties, C..
Specific composition and distribution of the zooplankton in Arcachon Bay varie along a salinity gradient from oceanic to neritic and lagoonal conditions. A peak of density and biomass is recorded in spring due to an increase of holoplanktonic species as well as larvae of benthic Invertebrates. A second maximum of abundance is observed in autumn. The community structure of copepods and polychaets larvae is considered in detail. The diversity (Shannon index, Sanders's rarefaction) decreases from the mouth of the Bay to the inner neritic water mass. Demographic parameters indicate that the populations structure is affected by the salinity gradient. Biomass increases significantly from the oceanic water to the inner neritic water mass while the species...

Asari (= Manila) clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, is the second bivalve mollusc in terms of production in the world and, in many coastal areas, can beget important socio-economic issues. In Europe, this species was introduced after 1973. In Arcachon Bay, after a decade of aquaculture attempt, Asari clam rapidly constituted neo-naturalized population which is now fished. However, recent studies emphasized the decline of population and individual performances. In the framework of a national project (REPAMEP), some elements of fitness, stressors and responses in Arcachon bay were measured and compared to international data (41 publications, 9 countries). The condition index (CI=flesh weight/shell weight) was the lowest among all compared sites. Variation in...
